Turning 65? Don’t let Medicare sneak up on you.
Medicare enrollment has deadlines and missing them can cost you.
Your Initial Enrollment Period is 7 months:
→ 3 months before 65
→ The month you turn 65
→ 3 months after
You can enroll through SSA.gov.
Still working? If you delayed Medicare because you or your spouse had employer group health coverage from current employment, you generally get an 8-month Special Enrollment Period after the employment or coverage ends.
Miss your enrollment window? You may have to wait for the January 1–March 31 General Enrollment Period, and you could face a Part B late-enrollment penalty that can last as long as you have Part B.
One more important detail: if you’re already receiving Social Security when you become eligible for Medicare, you may be automatically enrolled in Part A and Part B.
Bottom line: Medicare enrollment should be part of your retirement plan — not something you figure out after you retire.
