This Is Home, Not a Market
Cicero Is Part of My Family's Story
There are financial advisors who list a town in their service area, and there are advisors for whom that town is genuinely part of who they are. For me, Cicero is the latter.
My Uncle Mike was a craftsman who built things meant to last. The concrete work at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Cicero was his: every pour, every finish, done with the kind of care that outlasts the person who did it. Our family celebrated milestones at that church. And when we lost Uncle Mike Ahern, we said goodbye to him there too. Sacred Heart isn't a reference I make to sound local. It is a place permanently woven into who I am.
In 2010, I completed my Eagle Scout project at Strawtown Koteewi Park, organizing a crew, sourcing materials, and building a shelter that visitors to that park would use long after the project was finished. That experience shaped something in me that still guides how I approach this work: doing something right, for the benefit of someone else, takes real planning and real follow-through. You don't cut corners on things that are supposed to last.
I'm still on the course at Bear Slide Golf Club with the Men's Club. I still make it to the Cicero Market. The people I bump into around town aren't prospects; they're neighbors. That is a different kind of starting point for a financial relationship, and it produces a different kind of advice.
Why It Matters
Roots Create a Different Kind of Relationship
An advisor who genuinely knows Cicero understands more than your financial statement. They understand the rhythms of a town built around Morse Reservoir, the values of a community that prizes hard work and long-term thinking, and the specific life decisions that come with building wealth in a place like this.
That context shapes better conversations. Better planning. And a relationship built on something more than a portfolio review.
The Standard We're Held To
Fiduciary. Independent. Fully Transparent.
Not every financial advisor operates under the same rules. Understanding that difference is one of the most important things you can do before choosing who to trust with your financial future.
Legally Obligated to Put You First
As a registered investment advisor, Olympus Wealth Strategies operates under a fiduciary standard, meaning we are legally required to act in your best interest at all times. This is a higher bar than the "suitability" standard that governs some other advisory structures, where a recommendation only needs to be suitable, not necessarily optimal for you.
Independent — No Products to Push
We don't offer proprietary products, earn commissions from product sales, or answer to a corporate parent with quotas. Our recommendations are shaped by your goals, not by what pays us most. That independence helps reduce certain compensation-related conflicts common in other advisory structures, though no firm is entirely free of all potential conflicts.
Transparent, AUM-Based Fees
Our fees are based on a percentage of assets under management, disclosed clearly from the start, and structured so that our interests align with yours. No hidden charges, no transaction commissions, and no surprises. You always know what you're paying and why.
Assets Custodied at Charles Schwab
Your investments are held at Charles Schwab, one of the most established and financially sound custodians in the industry. You have direct, independent access to your accounts at all times. Your assets are never commingled with firm assets, providing a meaningful and tangible layer of protection.
CFP® and CPWA® — Rare Together
John holds both the CFP® (CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™) and the CPWA® (Certified Private Wealth Advisor®), a graduate-level credential focused specifically on advanced wealth management, tax strategy, estate planning, and behavioral finance for affluent clients. Very few advisors serving Hamilton County hold both designations. For families navigating significant financial decisions, that depth matters.
Everything Coordinated, Nothing Siloed
Investments, taxes, estate planning, insurance, retirement income, and business planning all work together at Olympus. That coordination, where every element of your financial life is considered as a whole rather than separately, is where meaningful planning actually happens.
Beyond Stocks and Bonds
Institutional-Quality Private Markets Access for Qualified Clients
For most of the past century, certain categories of investments, including private equity, private credit, real assets, and infrastructure, were available only to major institutions: university endowments, pension funds, and the ultra-high-net-worth. If you worked with a local branch office or a standard regional planning firm, these strategies were simply not available to you.
That gap still exists at most advisory firms serving Cicero and Hamilton County. It does not exist at Olympus Wealth Strategies.
Through carefully selected platforms and institutional structures, we provide qualified clients access to private markets strategies that go beyond what a conventional investment account can offer. For the right client, a business owner who has built meaningful equity, a professional with a growing portfolio, or a family looking to diversify beyond public markets, this opens a conversation that most local advisors simply cannot have.
These strategies are always considered as part of a comprehensive plan, never in isolation. A thorough review of your full financial picture, goals, time horizon, and risk tolerance comes first.
Talk About Private Markets AccessPrivate Equity
Ownership stakes in companies not traded on public exchanges. These strategies involve longer time horizons and limited liquidity, and may offer exposure to growth not captured in public equity markets. Not suitable for all investors; loss of principal is possible.
Private Credit
Lending strategies outside of the public bond market, potentially offering income-oriented characteristics and diversification from traditional fixed income. Carries credit risk and illiquidity risk; individual results vary by strategy and market conditions.
Real Assets
Strategies involving tangible assets such as real estate, natural resources, and related categories, often considered for their potential inflation-sensitivity and diversification characteristics. Values can decline; returns are not guaranteed.
Infrastructure
Investments in essential long-duration physical systems covering energy, transportation, and utilities, often considered a diversifying complement to traditional equity and fixed income. Illiquidity, regulatory, and operational risks apply.
A Note on Risk
Alternative investments are not appropriate for all investors. They typically involve some level of illiquidity and minimum investment thresholds. These strategies are reviewed only within the context of a comprehensive, personalized financial plan. Eligibility requirements apply.
What We Do Together

Every service is coordinated within a single, cohesive plan, not managed in separate silos by separate people with separate incentives.
Wealth and Asset Management
Portfolio construction, asset allocation, and ongoing investment management, including access to private markets strategies for qualified clients. Coordinated with your tax and estate plan so that nothing works against something else.
Retirement Planning
Building toward the retirement you have pictured: mornings on Morse Reservoir, time with family, and freedom from financial uncertainty. Financial Planning for Families
A cohesive plan that ties together income, savings, insurance, education goals, and legacy objectives. Cicero families are building something that deserves more than a generic strategy. It deserves a plan built around the life they're actually living.

Hamilton County's business community includes owners with needs that go well beyond a standard investment account: retirement plan design, S-Corp planning, exit strategy, and succession planning. We work with owners at every stage of the business lifecycle. Learn more about business owner services.
Tax Planning
Tax-aware strategies are embedded into portfolio management, retirement income planning, and estate planning, not treated as an afterthought. Roth conversion analysis, tax-loss harvesting, asset location, and charitable giving structures are considered together as part of a coordinated plan. Individual tax situations vary; consult a qualified tax professional.
Estate Planning and Legacy
What you build in Cicero deserves to carry forward. We help coordinate beneficiary structures, trust strategies, charitable giving plans, and wealth transfer, working alongside your estate attorney so the plan reflects your intentions. Estate plans should always be reviewed with qualified legal counsel.
The Morse Reservoir Mindset
Built for People Who Think Long-Term
There is something about a community built around a reservoir that shapes how people think. The families who have built their lives around Morse Reservoir understand patience. They understand that the things worth having, a retirement that isn't rushed, a business passed on with dignity, a lake house that stays in the family, take years of deliberate, consistent effort to build.
That same long-term orientation is exactly what sound financial planning requires. An advisor who is genuinely a fiduciary isn't selling you a product today and moving on. The relationship is designed to last through market cycles, life transitions, family changes, and the moments that don't fit neatly into any financial model.
When I built that shelter at Strawtown Koteewi Park in 2010, I wasn't thinking about the ribbon-cutting. I was thinking about whether it would still be standing twenty years later. I approach every client relationship the same way.

How It Works
What to Expect When You Reach Out
No pressure, no jargon, no obligation. Just an honest conversation about where you are, where you want to go, and whether we're the right fit to help you get there.
A 20-Minute Introductory Call
We start with a straightforward conversation about who you are, what you're working toward, and whether Olympus Wealth Strategies is a good fit. No sales pitch. No commitment required on either side.
A Deeper Discovery Conversation
If it makes sense to continue, we go deeper: reviewing your current financial picture, your goals, your tax situation, your estate documents, and the questions you haven't found good answers to yet. This is where real planning begins, with listening.
A Plan Built Around Your Life
We build a comprehensive financial plan around your specific goals, not a template lifted off a shelf. Every recommendation is grounded in your circumstances, your values, and your timeline. The plan evolves as your life does.
An Ongoing Relationship, Not a Transaction
The relationship doesn't end at onboarding. Life changes: jobs shift, businesses grow, markets move, families evolve. Your plan should move with all of it. We stay actively engaged, not just available when you call.

Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Questions we hear often from families and professionals in Cicero and across Hamilton County.
What is a normal fee for a financial advisor?
Most fiduciary advisors charge based on a percentage of assets under management (AUM), typically ranging from around 0.50% to 1.25% annually depending on portfolio size and scope of services. Some advisors use flat fees or hourly rates. At Olympus Wealth Strategies, our fee is AUM-based, disclosed upfront, and structured so our success is aligned with yours. There are no hidden commissions, no transaction charges, and no surprises. For a personalized fee discussion, we invite you to schedule an introductory call.
What is a red flag when evaluating a financial advisor?
A few patterns worth watching for: an advisor who cannot clearly explain how they are compensated, one who recommends products without first understanding your full financial situation, or one who sidesteps direct questions about whether they operate as a fiduciary. Verify credentials through FINRA BrokerCheck and ask directly whether the advisor is registered as a Registered Investment Advisor (RIA) and held to a fiduciary standard at all times, not just some of the time.
Is $20,000 enough to start working with a financial advisor?
It depends on the firm. Some advisors have minimums; others do not. Regardless of where you are today, building a planning relationship early, before the major decisions arrive, often produces better long-term outcomes than waiting until a portfolio reaches an arbitrary threshold. We encourage you to reach out for an honest conversation about where you are and what makes sense. Starting the conversation costs nothing.
What should I avoid in a financial advisor?
Avoid advisors who earn commissions from the products they recommend, as that structure can create incentives that do not align with your interests. Also be cautious of advisors who make specific promises about outcomes, use high-pressure tactics, or are vague about their regulatory standing. A fiduciary, independent advisor with verifiable credentials, transparent fees, and third-party custody of your assets is a meaningful starting baseline.
